Find possible length of third side of triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Following three statements must be true. 5 + x > 9 So, x > 4 5 + 9 > x So, 14 > x x + 9 > 5 So, x > -4

Can someone explain the statements given

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

the sum of two sides of a triangle must be greater than the third

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

this is a principle in triangles... if you take 5 and x as two sides...the sum of this must be greater than 9 5+x> 9 x > 9 - 5 x> 4

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then take 5 and 9 as two sides...the sum must be greater than the third side which is x so 9 + 5 > x 14 > x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well what you wrote boils down to: x > 4 x < 14 which means 4 < x < 14 (x is greater than 4, but less than 14) you also have x > -4, but that is useless knowledge because we know x is greater than 4 already.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

now take 9 and x as two sides...5 would be the third x + 9 > 5 x> 5 - 9 x> 4

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

x> -4*
