If one slice of chocolate cake contains 35g of carbohydrate, 15g of fat and 5g of protein, calculate the kilocalories that each slice of cake contains. how do I calculate kilocalories?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 kilocalorie = 4184 joules

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do I determine what the kilocalorie for each slice of cake is? Looking for the formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have data for one slice of cake now calculate combustion energy of every substance and then turn it in kilocalories

OpenStudy (btaylor):

For carbohydrates and proteins, there are 4 kilocalories per gram. For fat, there are 9 kilocalories per gram. So 35(4)+15(9)+5(4) = 295 kilocalories per slice. Sorry, Kryten, but your way won't work because you don't know which hydrocarbons, fats, or proteins are combusted.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that was a bit strange to me too but i didnt know energy values for fat and carbohydrates... but i know how energy value is usually determined.

Thank you both for your help. I was trying to make the problem much more complicated. I've got it now with your help, so thanks!
