Find the side length of the larger square, and find the side length of the smaller square. Then the shaded area is largeLength^2 - smallLength^2. largeLength^2 give you the area of the large square. smallLength^2 gives you the area of the small square

OpenStudy (jkristia):

As I see the the picute, you have a large squar and a small square. The shaded area is the area of the large square minus the area of the small square

OpenStudy (jkristia):

so - find the side length of the large square. See if you extend the line that shows 9 all the way to the top left corner, then you have a triangle with the the hypertonuse = 18. Then you can find the side length \[a^2+b^2=c^2\] You have c and a = b, so \[2b^2 = c^2 => b= \sqrt{\frac{c^2}{2}} =>b = 9\sqrt{2}\] (I hope my calculation is correct), so that is the side length of the large square.

OpenStudy (jkristia):

I think that should work.
