What, if anything, did Ryan do wrong when graphing this equation? He graphed a circle with center at (-5, -1) instead of at (25, 1). He graphed a circle with center at (-5, -1) instead of at (5, 1). Ryan’s graph is accurate. He graphed a circle with a radius of 5 instead of a radius of 25.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i forgot the first sentence sorry: Ryan’s teacher asked him to graph circle E with equation (x – 5)2 + (y – 1)2 = 25. Below is the graph he submitted.

OpenStudy (radar):

radius is correct \[\sqrt{25}=5\]

OpenStudy (radar):

Formula for circle whose center is not at (0,0) is: \[(x-h)^{2}+(y-k)^{2}=r ^{2}\] where h is the x value and k is the k is the y value of the circle's center location. r is the radius.

OpenStudy (radar):

Compare the two equations (one for the circle and the other for Circle E) and determine if he got the center right or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im still confused . can you work me thru it please

OpenStudy (radar):

Look only at the part that tells where the center is located. (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 and (x-5)^2 + (y-1)^2 -h=-5 -k=-1 do you follow that? this is from your provided equation and the equation of a circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

OpenStudy (radar):

Now lets smear some algebra on it. -h=-5 then h=5 then x=5 -k=-1 then k=1 then y=1 Now what did I say h and k represented.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm..... h is -5 and k is 1?

OpenStudy (radar):

h is 5 and k is 1 and if you read the 7th post above this one that means x=5 and y = 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok .

OpenStudy (radar):

So did Ryan put the center of the circle in the right spot? He does have the radius correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

OpenStudy (radar):

Looks like he has the center at (-5,-1) ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait no . i had to js take a retake it .

OpenStudy (radar):

He has the center at x=-4 and y=-1, not at x=4 and y=1 He goofed it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but wait in the picture is says -5 , -1

OpenStudy (radar):

change -4 to read -5

OpenStudy (radar):

Just a typo, we have been discussing 5 and 1 the 4 was a typo, What you need to see is the error of the signs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok .

OpenStudy (radar):

Ryan did it wrong, although he got the radius O.K., he messed up on the location of the center. It is not as the picture shows, it should be at point (5,1) do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you .

OpenStudy (radar):

The correct statement is the second statement.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you . can you please help me with one more ?

OpenStudy (radar):

You are welcome and good luck with these things.
