Simplify 13x - 4[x + (3 - x)].

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13x - 12 9x - 1 8x - 12

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Simplify each bracket--> remove 'em beginning with the innermost bracket- 13x - 4[x + 3 -x] 'x' and '-x' add up to zilch.. so, 13x - 4(3) = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x-1

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

How in this whole holy earth does "13x minus 4 times 3" equal '9x-1'?? That is some sorcery! -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sorry

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

1 - you mean option#1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Then, Jajaja! - Thou art correct. Only if you understand this, ofcourse. -.-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i kinda do

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Okay let's see what you understood of this: What's: x + [2x -3] ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x^2-3?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

x^2??? O.O Okay okay, seems like we have some serious clearing up to do here - ahaa! how will you open the brackets in this case? can you just type out the working? This is 'PLUS' sign - not a 'multiply'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okaayyy

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

So so - what 'okay' eh? The thingy opens like this: x + 2x - 3 = ?? thee knoweth addition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i get it im dumb

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

nah you no dumb. x +2x = what? just tell me this much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

very good!! now you just need to subtract a '-3' form it. so algebraically, that's simply "3x-3". that's it!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

get this much?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 13x-12 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya i know

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Okay one last one - a very easy one: what if there's a minus sign in the question: x-(2x-3) ---> how would you work in this case? show your working (jus' a couple of steps).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

umm umm - almost there..... hmm :) x -(2x -3) now there is a 'minus' sign beside the bracket - so that '-' combines with '+2x' inside the bracket, and makes it '-2x', as well as combines with that '-3' inside the bracket, and makes it a '+3' when it opens up. so, when you remove the brackets, you get something like: x - 2x + 3 so what would this^ be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+3

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

umm umm umm - still one tiny problem- x - 2x = what??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-x?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

yeah!! so -x added to 3 --> whazzat?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

just like the previous one - you can't add two unlike things, so you let them remain in (something + some*x) form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-x+3

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Yeah!! you got that aha!! so want some more fun practice? :P ( I am guessing the answer will be a big 'NO' :P)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ur right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NOOO!!!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Haha okay!!! Lol Just stay calm and cool - math ain't that big a monster as it seems (in fact it's no monster at all). it's just the fear. Kill it before it kills you ;)
