I have a question for everybody.. This is for my writing class and I'm trying to conduct a research about what people think of GE classes. What do you guys think about taking GE classes? Is it helpful? Why or why not?
What is GE?
General Education.. It's the classes required in colleges... To graduate..
Here's my case: I am not allowed to work and I am broke. I love to study and I can study anything I want using the internet; but since I am broke, I need an educational opportunity - scholarship or a job that helps me survive, so that I can study. That's the only positive thing I see in college; otherwise, Internet is the best university in the world.
I like your answer.. But what I am asking is that cause in college, they make us take classes that we already took in high school.. So basically it's just the same classes that we took but we still had to take it because it was required for us to do it but other doesn't see the point in it and others really liked it... So base on your answer I feel like you'll say that we don't need to take these classes because they're useless.. >_<
No, in that case it's necessary; because lots of people forget the subjects and lots of people start studying those subjects with different backgrounds. For example, if it wasn't because of GE classes, a person who has studied mathematics and physics in high school cannot start studying political science or sociology for example. I believe those classes are necessary.
Is that what you mean?
Yup.. That's what I mean.. Thank you for your answer @Parsa ! :D
Glad I could help! :)
The main issue is breadth vs. depth of knowledge and what it means to be an educated professional, citizen, etc. GE courses exist, because there's a general belief that any college grad should have at least a basic understanding of most common subjects (cf. liberal arts education). I agree with that, though I might argue with what those core subjects should be (e.g. I think that philosophy and logic should be GE courses). That having been said, GE courses tend to be the worst learning experiences: large groups of students, lower-quality teachers, etc. So, though I don't like them, I think they're necessary largely because secondary education doesn't sufficiently prepare students with a necessary breadth of knowledge to succeed in the world.
@roycekimmons : That is so true! I like your answer.. I totally agree with what you said.. Thanks for answering! :D
