Use the Newton's method to find the value of squareroot3.27 into six decimal places

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you recall the mechanics behind the method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes i knoww the formula but idk how to apply it when the number is given

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if i recall it right, start off with a value close to it; say: sqrt(4 - x)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

whats the formula, that might help me remeber it better tho

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://www-mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/chapter1/node9.html does this look about right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not quite sure i never did square roots of it i only did with regulars

|dw:1338772066342:dw| this is an idea that i think amounts to it the equation of the line tangent to a close value can approximate it; then determine the difference between the linear approx and the real value and guess again. its just a fancy trial and error
