Anica jogs for two hours every day. She follows a runner’s trail a certain distance and then turns around and returns back to her starting point on the same trail. On the way out, she runs at a rate of 6 mph; on the return she runs at a rate of 4 mph. How many miles does she run in two hours?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Let x = miles of trail one-way.\[\frac x6+\frac x4=2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But aren't they different distances?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

She starts at one place, runs out to a certain point and then returns to where she started. The distance covered has to be the same. The time to cover that distance varies however.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oooooooh. Ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it 9 and 3/5?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

No. Recheck your math.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean as in both ways. Not just one way.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Yes, sorry.....I didn't realize you meant both ways.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. Thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

You're welcome.
