Which poetic device is used in line 10 of Poe’s “The Raven,” “surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore”?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

metaphor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yuup! That's a metaphor!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought so :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My first guess was alliteration (repetition of initial sounds). But it could be an assonance. This part, 'sorrow—sorrow' is a repetition. Hope that helps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, an assonance is repeating of a vowel sound, which sorrow-sorrow is not repeating the vowel sound, it's just repeating the word itself. An alliteration is when a sentence or phrase repeats the first letter in each word, and that's clearly not the case. So what you have is what I have stated before, and that is a metaphor! Metaphors literary figures of speech that describe a subject by asserting that they are, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated objects.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm...okay. But I was saying that 'sorrow-sorrow' was a repetition not an assonance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, wasn't sure what part you were referring to was the assonance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorrow, for, lost, Lenore.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah, no I don't see it. I can almost see the alliteration for- lost Lenore though : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what is it then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a metaphor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some one said they loved me is that true yes or no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it's true. someone said i should just hang myself and i said, 'after you'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is. so he does love me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, @afranklin12 he does. who is he anyway?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my friends dad brother

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your friend's uncle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. he is only 21 d i am only18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will be back later thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How could you say 'only' 21 & 18. I'm 15...and I feel old.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You feel old? I'm 42!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because he is 21 years old and i am 18 years old

OpenStudy (anonymous):

question still open, wow
