Put in descending power order & identify coefficient. 1. 2x^5 - 12 +3x 2. 2a+4a^3-5a^2-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. 2x^5 + 3x - 12; coefficients: 2, 3, -12 2. 4a^3 - 5a^2 + 2a - 1; coefficients: 4, -5, 2, -1

please explain what is a coefficient and what is descending order.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are u still there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

coefficients are the numbers. descending order is the order going from highest to lowest.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I guess that is what confused me about the negative #. I thought it would be a different order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt the negative # be last?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

example. -4d^4+1-d^2 .... Would it be .... -4d^4-d^2+1 ????? coefficients being 4,1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the order would be: \[-4d ^{4}-d ^{2}+1\] but your coefficients are incorrect. What are the numbers that are given to you? remember if, for example, \[-5x ^{3}-x+2\] the coefficients would be -5, -1 and 2. It is important to remember that if there is a variable x or d or any letter (being a variable) there is an imaginary 1. like in the problem i gave the -x, its coefficient (#) is -1.

I understand now thank you so much for your help

you are most welcome :)
