Is this an example of direct characterization? Ill post it below...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to find an example of direct characterization in the novel Hoops by Walter Dean Myers and I was wondering if this was a good example? "From the first time I played basketball in grade school I was good. I was good, but I was short then." Is that direct characterization? I believe this does play a big part in the main characters overall personality? But I just don't know if this is a substantial example. Please, someone help me! Any help would be appreciated. :)

I think that this is direct characterization but to an extent. You are just telling us about how good the character is at basketball. It does explain the characters personality becuase you are showing his dialouge and the way he/she speaks. Make it have a little more detail about the character, and I think you will be golden! Very well done, Renee :D

Thank you! this is actually a direct quotation from the novel so I can't really add detail to it but should I add something like this to the excerpt?: "I was always on the court practicing, trying to get my game more together. I used to imagine being the shortest guy in the NBA and scoring the winning basket in the championship."

Now THAT is much better, and I am sorry, I misunderstood. Silly me. LOL But I do like the second one buch better :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem, but do you think it would be a good idea to use both example, or just stick with the one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

examples*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could definetly use both, I mean I would personally, just to be safe. I think they are both good examples and you should utilize both of them :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! Thank you so much for clarifying that with me, I really appreciate the help! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem!! I am happy to help :)
