what does B E D M A S stand for?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

its BODMAS not BEDMAS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

someone told me on here its bedmas

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

All forms of this abbreviation are described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations In Canada its usually called BEDMAS

OpenStudy (ajprincess):

B-Brackets O-Of D-Division M-Multiplication A-Addition S-Subtraction.

Parth (parthkohli):

PEMDAS BODMAS BEDMAS PEDMAS So many *facepalm* These are order of operations btw

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

An extract from that web page: Mnemonics are often used to help students remember the rules, but the rules taught by the use of acronyms can be misleading. In the United States the acronym PEMDAS is common. It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. PEMDAS is often expanded to "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally" with the first letter of each word creating the acronym PEMDAS. Canada uses BEDMAS and the UK uses BIDMAS or BODMAS. In Canada and other English speaking countries, Parentheses may be called Brackets, or symbols of inclusion and Exponentiation may be called either Indices, Powers or Orders, which have the same precedence as Roots or Radicals. Since multiplication and division are of equal precedence, M and D are often interchanged, leading to such acronyms as BEDMAS, BIDMAS, BODMAS, BERDMAS, PERDMAS, and BPODMAS.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you see its just a shortcut to remember higher priority math operations Bracket Of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction so if u get sthng like 3*2+1 you must first multiply 3 and 2 and then add the sum to 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when expanding and simplifying i would use bodmas?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

yep

OpenStudy (aravindg):

look at my example above

OpenStudy (aravindg):

gt it?

Parth (parthkohli):

I prefer PEMDAS because it has the 'exponent' thing too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is that?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@ParthKohli dont confuse her lols

Parth (parthkohli):

P Parentheses E Exponent M Multiplication D Division A Addition S Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG

Parth (parthkohli):

dw use any according to your preference :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm from Canada so that's why I said BEDMAS Brackets Exponents Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused now, i just need to know what method to use during expand and simplify and how to use it and how to knowwhat to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9a+3(8-2a) this is the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any method of Order of Operations. They're basically all the same
