what is periderm and protoderm and where do they originate from in a new plant ?
The root apical meristem gives rise to the three primary meristem: The protoderm, ground meristem, and the procambium. The periderm is the outer layer of woody roots and stems, which will consists of the cork cambium and the tissues produced by it. As roots mature, the epidermis is replaced by a group of tissues (the periderm) in the plants body. It's main function will be to protect the underlying tissue from desiccating, freezing, heat injuries, mechanical destruction, and even diseases. Although the periderm may develop in leaves, or even in fruits, its main function is to protect the roots and the stem of a plant. This tissue is composed of phellogen, phelloderm, and phellem. In turn, the epidermis will derive from the protoderm (this lies outside of the stem) and it will then surround the young root, while it is one cell layer thick. This is the outermost primary meristem and it will produce cell walls, which will become the dermal tissue. Hope that helps! n_n
