how do you add square roots?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

(x)^(1/2) + x^(1/2) = 2x^(1/2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[5\sqrt{2}+3\sqrt{2}\]

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

8(2)^(1/2)

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

as long as the square roots are the same you can add them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be \[8\sqrt{2}\]?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

yes Remember sqrt(2) = (2)^(1/2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

you can add 5√2+3 but it would be messy as you would have to calculate the value of (2)^(1/2)*5 to add them
