Give three specific examples of consequences that can result from a calculation error when converting from the U.S. to the metric system.
you mean hypothetical situations where metric/US confusion would cause problems
?
yes
I will give you one, and hopefully that will convey the idea: someone forgets to convert feet to meters this means that any velocity we enter (as a number) is going to represent a smaller quantity than if we had remembered to change to meters (this is because 1m/s > 1ft/s ) so if we program into, say, a computer the number for the speed of our rocket should be about 10^7 units, and we are actually in feet, we are really programming the computer to accelerate the rocket to only about 1/3 of the intended speed, about 3.3x10^6 in reality (since 1ft is about 1/3 m ) this kind of mistake, as you may imagine, can cost lives
thank you
I remember this actually happened when I was in school, though nobody died it cost NASA a 2 billion dollar space probe I remember my physics teacher pointing out that story at the time :) you're welcome
