OpenStudy (migo):

Why is it important that monochromatic light be used to make the interference pattern in Young's interference experiment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get distinct fringes..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Different colors of light have different wavelengths, so they will interfere slightly differently. Using one color lets you see the interference clearly.

OpenStudy (migo):

do you mean the unlike frequencies interfere away from each other ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No...they'll just have slightly different diffraction patterns, so when superimposed, you can't see the individual diffraction anymore...it'll all overlap and become white.

OpenStudy (migo):

okay .. thanks alot mate :)

OpenStudy (migo):

quarkine..thanks too ;)

This is actually a quite interesting question that I feel needs to be answered in a manner like this: Different colors of light have different wavelengths, so they will interfere slightly differently. However, using one color lets you see the interference clearly. They'll just have slightly different diffraction patterns, so when superimposed, you can't see the individual diffraction anymore...it'll all overlap and become white.
