simplify 5 square root 3 plus square root 3

OpenStudy (kainui):

Consider adding 5x+x. How many x's are there total?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mean 5 * square root of 3 plus square root of 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if so, then Kainui's example will help you

OpenStudy (kainui):

\[5\sqrt{3}+\sqrt{3}\] You're just adding 5 of one thing with 1 of something, what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 5 because dont the two square roots cancel out each other

OpenStudy (kainui):

Nope, you see when you add 5 square roots of 3 and 1 square root of 3 you'll get 6 square roots of 3. Pretend square root of 3 is an apple. So if you have 5 apples and 1 apple, when you add them together you'll have 6 apples. Except remember these are squareroots of 3 not apples. Does that make sense or not?
