what would you call this?
What is the difference between Mitosis and Meiosis?
Mitosis takes place within somatic cells and meiosis is in gamete cells
And what's the point of each?
uh sex determination right?
Nope, sex is determined by the X and Y chromosomes. Your mom has XX and your dad has XY, so you will always get an X chromosome from your mom but you have a 50/50 chance of getting a X or Y from your dad. So in order to get half of all your chromosomes, not just your sex ones, you have to have to get half from your dad and half from your mom. Every time a cell splits it puts half of its DNA into one and the other half in the other. Keep in mind that every time a healthy cell divides it has created a copy of its DNA. During mitosis the cell just splits into two because it has only replicated its DNA once and has a copy for both. But in Meiosis you are splitting the cells once so that each has 1 complete set of DNA and then again so that each of those cells has half. Then these two halves come together and make a baby! So recap: Mitosis will do things like make new skin cells while Meiosis creates cells with half of the parent's DNA to be combined with another to create a new whole set with different pairs than either parent!
okay thanks for clearing that up, but i still don't know what you would call my attachment?
