would this sequence be arithmetic or geometric?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5

OpenStudy (btaylor):

neither. There is no common difference or common ratio.

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Well Do you know about HP i.e. Harmonic progression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why would it be neither?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if a1-a2 = a2-a3 , then they have a common "difference" if a1/a2 = a2/a3 then they would have a common "ratio" and with any luck i didnt get the backwards

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

for any sequence say a,b,c,...... to be in AP we have b-a = c- b This is not satisfied by given series For being GP , we have ac = b^2 This is also not satisfied by given series HP It is a type of progression in which the reciprocals of the terms are in AP For example 1/x , 1/(x+2), 1/(x+4),......................

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Clearly your series is HP

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we can play with that some more if a1 -2a2 + a3 = 0 ... its arith if a1a3/a2^2 = 1 ... its geo

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4,............ The reciprocals of terms are 1, 2, 3, 4,..... This is an AP So the given series is an HP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok thanks!

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Mention not.
