If the ATCG nucleotides are the ladder rungs in the double helix, am I right in assuming that there are no 'sides' to this ladder: that the rungs hold together vertically also?

I think you are because if i'm not mistaken RNA is not a double helix and holds itself vertically however since it's DNA i think you should assume tat there is a complementary strand
