can somebody answer this, If you walk into a cold room while dressed for the beach, why do you become cold? How can a coat keep you warm? thanks much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well..a coat will keep you warm because it is made for such a weather condition... its cloth material eg. wool will trap the body heat inside and not allow it to escape.. same goes with windcheaters..... but your beach clothes wont cause the property of the cloth material is not such as that of wool etc.

OpenStudy (turingtest):

In a word, insulation. Clothing blocks contact between you from the atmosphere around you. If your body and the atmosphere cannot exchange heat freely, then the heat is mostly trapped in your body and the volume of air between you and your coat, which isn't much compared to that of the atmosphere. A smaller volume of a substance takes less energy to raise to a given temperature, so the air between you and your jacket rises relatively rapidly. Once it has reached about the same temperature as your skin it stabilizes, keeping you warm. Without the clothing the energy from your body keeps dissipating until the atmosphere reaches the same temperature as your body, which never happens because the atmosphere is too large and can hold too much energy. Therefor your body just keeps losing heat energy, and you get colder and colder.
