An unlit match is held near ( not touching) to an extremely hot bunsen flame. The match does NOT get hot enough to light WHY?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

may be coz that energy required to initiate the combustion is not supplied by mere radiation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the medium between them is not a good conductor i.e air

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

energry transfer takes place by radiation nd convection...only so....if u put a better conductor in b/n the match may light up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah exactly..

OpenStudy (shane_b):

The primary reason is because air is a poor conductor. In addition, the majority of heat from the flame is moving upward and not to the side.
