is 0 a natural number?

Parth (parthkohli):

Nope

Parth (parthkohli):

Natural numbers are positive numbers that start from 1.

Parth (parthkohli):

0 is every number but a natural number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About half of math literature consider it as a natural number, and about half consider it as not..

Parth (parthkohli):

Well actually natural numbers are {1,2,3...}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THink of it this way. natural numbers are numbers you'd use in counting.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My textbook in discrete mathematics, for example, includes 0 as a natural number.Although personally, I don't haha.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Natural Numbers are the counting numbers, the number we use when we are counting.. Whole Numbers are the Natural Numbers including 0 in it...

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why natural numbers considered natural?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dunno

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

becoz they r natural lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep that link says it all. Some include 0 as a natural number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Natural @bernardthe1st Read the top of the link I posted. Natural as in what you count with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Excluding or including 0 as a natural number has their own merits, mathematicians say.. So there's really no standard answer to this. It just depends on the context of where you're using natural numbers. And yes please read @Wired's post above, he has a link explaining it.

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

So as a summary; The whole world doesn't take 0 as a natural number though there are some exceptions. & Even if u give exam u should write 0 = natural no. otherwise u know what is the result LOL. @Ray951 k! my friend

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

@w is right.

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

@windsylph

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

sorry in that para \[0 \ne \natural\]

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

natural

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 is a natural number because it is a real number.

OpenStudy (maheshmeghwal9):

write it in exam & wt would u get; u know @cornitodisc The question contains philosophy. u should remember only @Ray951 \[0\color{red}{\ne} \text{{N} No.}\]
