With the restriction x ≠ 2, which of the following is the simplified form of 2x-7/x-2 - x+5/x-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't understand the last part of your question... Could you please make it a little more clear, Im sure I can help...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you mean the problem? sure. its (2x-7)/(x -2) - (x + 5)/(x - 2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes the problem lol :) .. .. What grade are u in? Okay, so uhmm, do you wish to solve for x ..?

You need to use the system of ''FOIL'' ... Are you familiar with that? We call it that in my school...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FOIL stands for: First, Outer, Inner and Last (regarding the brackets)

I am a sophomore in high school. Yes, Iknow what FOIL is. My answer is (x - 12)/(x - 2), but I don't know if it's hte same if it has the restriction of x is not equal to 2.

What is a ''sophomore'' ? Well, I'm in grade 11 :) . Thats great! Yes I've just worked out the equation and ur answer is absolutely correct! What I don't get is that ... How can you have a restricton when there is no 'denominator' anywhere in the equation...... But if you say that the restriction is 'x not equal to two' .. .. Than complete ur answer by making (x-2) (x-12)=0 .. Than x=2 and x=12 .. ... Now ur final answer would be 'x=12' and 'x=2' will be 'not valid' as its the restriction...
