what is segmentation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll put it simply. Segmentation is used to describe any part of an organism's body that looks like it is made up of many copies of the same part. One example is the human spine. The spine is a long bone column. You know that. It is made of a series of smaller bones called "vertebrae." These vertebrae look very similar to one another, and they all link together in a line, in order to form the spine. Another example is the earthworm. If you look closely, you can see that the earthworm looks as though it is made up of little segments, like lego pieces, all put together to make one long body.
