How many supporting details should you develop to back up your thesis?
At least 3.
I have to do thesis statements all the time for my humanities class they say we should at least provide 5 that way you know your research has done you justice.
A thesis should generally have 3-5 big supporting topics. Within those topics, there should generally be 2-3 facts/quotes/resources that provide a good framework for that subtopic. This shows that you know your material, did your research, and are capable of using outside materials to support your essay.
This isn't a well-received viewpoint among literature teachers, but writing formats don't exist. Your thesis should be a comprehensive, impressive, and wonderful exposition on your topic. That is what is demanded of you from your teacher; you can't use a "template" to produce that.
Limitless said it best! If you're writing for an English class, PLEASE get out of the habit of sticking to the five-paragraph essay as your model. Your ideas and the number of supporting points you have are contingent on your argument. We English teachers are tired of the same old model.
