Which of the following represents the area of a rectangle whose length is 5x – 3 and whose width is x + 7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad. i read triangle lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Area = length *width If the length and width are 5x-3 and x+7, you simply plug them into the formula. Area = length*width Area = (5x-3)(x+7) Can you go from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 5x2 + 9x – 21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get the +9x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad, so it would just be 5x^2-21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how did you get that one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, you're close. It's not 9x, because 5*7=35, not 12. So 35x-3x= 32x. The middle term should be 32x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok gotcha! so 5x^2 + 32x – 21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah
