what is the difference between ground and earth?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it's the same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ground and earth is the same..earth is more for when you're describing the ground for an AC socket I believe. Ground is more for electronic circuits. The function is also identical.

OpenStudy (nick67):

Well, there is a big difference between ground and earth; ground is only a reference within a circuit, i.e. zero Volt reference. You have ground, for instance, also in a mobile device, battery equipped. Earth is a physical connection between the device (usually its chassis or the external enclosure) and the external AC plug; this line then goes to the building's earth, with a dedicated cable. Its function is for safety.
