Why text messaging caused the deterioration of proper English usage?
The deterioration of proper English usage through the use of text messaging has three major proponents: A) Text messaging is meant to be fast and efficient. Therefore, punctuation is generally left out or simplified. This leads to an overall lack of knowledge in correct sentence structuring. B) Abbreviations are common. It's a lot easier to type out "lol" or "ttyl" than it is to write "laugh out loud" or "talk to you later," respectively. These words become so commonplace that some students may allow them to slip into formal writing. In more extreme cases, it's possible (although improbable) that some students may forget how to spell words without the abbreviations. C) Auto-correct is inherent to most cellular devices now. Users may no longer feel compelled to know how to correctly spell a word since it will be fixed for them anyway.
It's mostly the abbreviations because it makes you use them regular and might use them for an official document on accident. I have to argue on the autocorrect though because believe it or not it makes people more carful about their spelling. This is because the autocorrect usually gets the word wrong and the text will turn into something horrible. And horribly funny. Just search "clumsy thumbsy" or "Damn you autocorrect" on youtube and you'll see what I mean. You'll end up literally rolling n the floor laughing out loud.
