In an argument, you should think of a premise as a starting point. To convince someone of something that's NOT obvious or that they do not accept, you begin by making a statement that IS obvious or that they do accept. Once you've established the starting point, you can make a series of logical statements and arrive at the non-obvious conclusion. So your argument goes: Premise- Starting points, things to be accepted before hand Connecting statements- Things that follow logically from the premises. If you accept the premise, then you cannot deny these connecting statements. Conclusion- What you are trying to prove. Usually the last statement. If you accept the premises and all of the connecting statements are valid, then the conclusion should follow naturally.
