One of the factors that allowed civilizations to thrive was man's ability to

adapt

Reason. Adapt is good, but all animals must adapt. Reason spawned the foundations of human civilization: law, trade, government, as well as all the skills necessary to create those things.

Farm. Before the domestication of plants and animals, people couldn't settle in one place. Before farming, groups were nomadic or only seasonally sedentary. Farming and the subsequent food surplus allowed populations to grow in one area. The need for irrigation systems and organized labor for planting and harvesting led to the rise of leadership roles. The need to record inventories of animals and trade goods led to the development of writing. Farming was the catalyst for the first civilizations to form and is at the root of many of the things we consider to define civilization.

i would agree with all thought but. Being CIVILIZATION ability thrive not just humans ability to thrive i would say organized/specialized labor. Humans could thrive with adaption and reason. It was labor like farming that made civilization in the fertile crescent thrive.
