How come geneticists aren't able to mutate a human's DNA to have two y chromosomes?

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

you mean geneticists.... genealogists study family lines of people?

whoops, sorry, *autocorrect

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

This question is better suited in the Biology group... I don't know much about Biology ... I know men can be born with an extra Y-chromosome ... so they are XYY

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

very rare mutation though

OpenStudy (paxpolaris):

why would you want a Human... or animal ... with just 2 Y-chromosomes? the X and Y chromosomes weren't always used to determine gender. Even today, in turtles or crocodiles for example, both males and females have two X's; gender is determined by the temperatures at which the eggs were kept... As the Y-chromosome (a mutated X-chromosome) began to determine male gender ... it began to be inherited directly from father to son. It would undergo random mutations over time, But it would no longer participate in GENE SHUFFLING during reproduction like all other genes including the x-chromosome. Today, the y chromosome is shriveled up ... much smaller than the X-chromosome... with much less data.. .. (and maybe a lot more corrupted) ... SO it can't hope to take over all functions of the X-chromosome.

please post future Biology questions in the Biology group. and please close this question, if it has been answered/discussed to your satisfaction.

mutation is a tedious and rather risky process

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gender is determined by x and y chromosomes in humans. This is a fact. A female has two x chromosomes and a male has an x and a y. I was just wondering if they have ever tried to genetically engineered a person with two y chromosomes and if it was possible. I know they haven't yet. I know one thing - the human with two y chromosomes probably would be something we haven't even thought of. It might have different glands, no nipples, a whole new reproductive system...a whole new gender. Pretty crazy.
