What is the slope of a horizontal line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its 0 for a fact

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the rise is 0 and the run is 0

OpenStudy (nikkimc):

yes, 0

OpenStudy (nikkimc):

rise over run...so if it rises 0, the answer is 0

Let's say you have a horizontal line with the formula y=3. Take two points on that line, (0.3) and (1,3). Using your slope formula, you end up with 3-3 over 1-0. That's 0/1, or 0. If you have a vertical line with formula x=3, you have points (3,0) and (3,1). Plug in to get 1-0 over 3-3, or 1/0, which is an infinite slope.
