Graph an ellipse with foci at (±4, 0) and a minor axis of length 6 by hand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please helpp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where do you think you'll put the center?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i got it actually

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just put the center at 0,0 and then a point at -4,0 and 4,0. then for the minor axis length of 6, i put a point at 0,3 and 0,-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk if its right but thats what i did

OpenStudy (phi):

Here is a picture http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Ellipse.html if you had a piece of string tied to both focus points, and it is just long enough to reach (0,3), you can use it to draw the whole ellipse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its that first proiblem

OpenStudy (phi):

look at the link. notice that the ellipse goes around the focus.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The (0,3) and (0,-3) are right. The (-4,0) and (4,0) are actually inside the ellipse. Use c²=a²-b² to find a. c is 4 (focus) and b is 3 (minor). a=5 so draw though (-5,0) and (5,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh alright thanks. while i have it up, can you take a look at number 6 to and tell me if thats right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

looks good

OpenStudy (phi):

looks ok, except it would look better if you use the same spacing on the x and y axes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thanks, and ya ino but im in a hurry and i dont really care if its all pretty or not lol
