Imagine you are the nucleus of a plant or animal cell and have been asked to mentor an organelle that is new to the cell. Take your mentee on a tour of the cell, describing the major parts of the cell and their functions. You may present your tour in a variety of ways; just be sure it demonstrates a complete understanding of the organelles, their functions, and how they work together to support the cell. You may present your tour in one of the following ways: A written dialogue, from your perspective as the nucleus, explaining the parts of the cell to your mentee. A presentation
Pretend you are the mayor of a city, this city being the cell. First, what powers the city? The mitochondria, the power plant of the cell. This is where cellular respiration occurs and ATP or energy is created. Net, how do you get around your city? The ER or endoplasmic reticulum is your highway. It is active in membrane synthesis, so basically transport. Is your city safe? It is as long as you have a plasma membrane, this is your strong city wall. It is a semi permeable membrane so it can choose what is allowed to come in and what isn't. Next where do your goods come from? The factories in city cell are called ribosomes, they make protein. How does the protein get distributed? The golgi apparatus is in charge of that. It is like the post office its job is to sort and secrete (distribute) the cells products. Where does the waste go? to the dump of coarse, the dump being lysosomes. Macromolecules go there to be hydrolyzed. Last and certainly not least you have your city hall, the nucleus. This is where it all goes down, this is your city planning commission. The nucleus makes ribosomes and holds your DNA. Thus concludes our tour of the animal cell. P.S. I wish i were in your shoes, i prefer this stuff to micro biology.
