See, when eliminating a particular value like y in this case, we always try to make the coefficients of y in both the equations equal.. In first equation, coefficient of y is 1 In second it is -2 So, multiply first equation by 2... Tell me what you get after multiplying??

It is the best way to start this problem by multiplying 2 with both sides of the first equation and then adding them you will get x... Try it..
