Does anyone know how to tackle this problem: At Central High School, the math club has 15 members and the chess club has 12 members. If a total of 13 students belong to only one of the two clubs, how many students belong to both clubs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[15+12\] equals what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so, subtract 13 out of the 27 and then you will get your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14 !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

GREAT!

Even though the site I'm on marked me wrong, maybe there should be some type of equation set up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what? what site is it? do you have the link?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im looking at it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay lets try to work it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me get a pen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

math=15 members

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and chess = 12 members

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uhuh.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, math has 2 groups, those who are in both, and those who are only in math, which is 15-n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chess has 12- the ones who are in both, so 12-n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 belong to only one of the two clubs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(15-n)+(12-n)=13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when we solve this, n=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got this by randomly clicking answers cuz im only going into the 6th grade soo... yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seeing it made more sense, I really did not understand forming an equation with this but now it makes sense. Ty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol oh alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i'll message u okay ttyl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k :D
