Solve the following system by using graph paper or graphing technology. 3x - 2y = 7 9x - 6y = 3 What is the solution to the system? a)No Solutions b)Infinite Solutions c)(3, 2) d)(3, -2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as the question stated, draw a graph. It will help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried to turn the given equations into slope intercept form and got y= 3/2x - 7/2 for the first equation so i'm confused as to what the y-intercept is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the y-intercept would be -7/2 for the first equation then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you but how do I graph -7/2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is the y-intercept. Substitute a x coordinate into the equation and you get another point, which will help you to be able to draw the graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thank you :) but do you know if it's a b c or d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the decimal equivalent to -7/2....???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1.75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no... -7/2 \(\ne \) -1.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry -3.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... so that's the y-intercept for the first equation... what's the y-intercept for the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3.5 and 1.5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second equation should only have 1 y-intercept.... what is it? and how did you get it? (show me, like u did for the first equation.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the second equation 9x-6y = 3, I put it in slope intercept form so that makes it 3/2x - 1/2 and 1/2 in decimal form is 1.5...that's what I did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/2 in decimal form is not 1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... so the y-intercept for the second equation is -1/2 or -0.5, agree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes agreed!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the slopes of each equation... what are they?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the first one is -1/3x and the second is 3/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the second post of this question... you posted the correct equation with the correct slope...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah sorry i am disorganized right now but okay, so both of the slopes are 3/2 correct? so that means the lines are parallel and the answer is a) no sloution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if they're parallel, then it could mean that they are same line ---> infinite solutions OR different line ____> no solution how do you know they're different lines?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because different slopes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but they have the same slope... slope is 3/2 for both....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean y-intercepts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so answer is a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right....:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw...:)
