is it true that mitochondria and other organelles evolved from prokaryotic cells ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a theory that e.g. mitochondria or chloroplast (the two examples that are used the most) evolved from simpler cells, i.e. prokaryoctic cells. But i guess there never will be an absolutely clear evidence for this theory although it has been showed that the mitochondria and some bacterias share a relatively common ancestor (i am not sure but might be some guys from Hawaii who found that out). Apart form that it is quite logic (look at the own genome of a mitochondria). If you are interested in more information about this topic you should read about the Endosymbiotic Theory ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endosymbiotic_theory ).
