how do you identify feet as a derived or fundamental unit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one foot is 12inches its derived. . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FPS system

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@theyatin so therefore mile and second will also be derived?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@theyatin what about mile , area , second, mass, year , density, volume, weight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Yahoo! what is the fps system?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

second is basic unit it can not be derived one inch =2.54cm and 12inch= 1foot i mile=1.6km area density weight volume year are derived.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_unit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fps is Brit version (foot pound second).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Theyatin, what you're teaching is wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@maameb I suggest you forget what theyatin just taught you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SmoothMath do u know the correct answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, maameb, think of it this way. Some things, if I ask you to measure them, you will JUST measure what I asked you. An example is time. If I ask you how long something takes, you will get out a watch and you will time it. It doesn't matter if you tell me in seconds, minutes, hours. All you're measuring is time, and time is a fundamental unit because it doesn't depend on anything else. Now, think about what you would measure if I asked you what something's SPEED was.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

smooth math sorry i forgot fps i have passed my higher secondary past 7 years so forgot few things. . . maameb i was wrong sorry . . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A watch wouldn't measure it for you. Neither would a ruler. But, if you measured how FAR something went, that is distance, and you also know how much TIME it took for it to get there, then you could calculate what its speed was.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's because SPEED is a derived unit. It DEPENDS on distance and time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

smooth is going right way smoothly ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any unit that is a derived unit can be expressed in terms of at least two other units.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@smoothmath okay so can you identify feet , mile , area, second, mass , year , density, volume and weight for me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about what quality the unit is used to measure. The fundamental qualities are: distance, time, mass, temperature, moles, electric current, or luminosity (brightness). Anything else is derived.
