Hi, I'm kinda switching into programming after finishing my Management Science Bachelor's Degree. I'm currently almost with the basics i.e. XHTML & CSS and I'm wondering where to head next. Which programming language would you recommend in accordance to today's trend? Thanks

Python!

What rates it better compared to Java, PHP and the rest? If you don't mind me asking.

Really no programming language is better than the other. Just some languages does a better job for a particular problem than the other. On that note, Python is a very easy language to learn and can be ran on Linux and Windows. This is one thing that makes Python desirable. Also, it is not a compiled language like Java, which means you don't have to worry about compiling your program. Not only is it an easy language learn, it is very robust language. You can use it to build standalone apps too web application. If you are into web programming. I would most definitely look into PHP. There are a lot of great open source content management systems that are built on PHP. For instance, Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla. If you know PHP, you can harness the power of these CMS and do many many great things. Not only are there CMS, there are web forms too. Such as Simple Machine and PHPBB3. Anyways learn it all!!!! :-)

I sure do plan to learn it all @MathDoodler, where I have a problem is which to start with and how to proceed after that. I'm just fascinated by code if I may say so and I'm working my way through it. What I know for now is that I need the XHTML & CSS as a foundation, and as stated, I'm almost done with these. I was wondering how to proceed from there with Java, PHP and Python as the options on the table.

Well, are you into web programming? It appears you are. I say this because you are learning CSS and XHTML. If you are into web programming, I would learn Javascript http://www.w3schools.com/js/ and learn http://jquery.com/ On top of that, learn HTML5, learn about SVG http://www.w3schools.com/svg/default.asp For server side programming I would start with PHP. To study php, you can download and install your own Apache web server and also install PHP with Mysql database. Another option is to buy some hosting from a place like godaddy.com that offers Linux hosting, which will support php so you can practice with it.

Also, if you are a student, you can get some cool free tools from Microsoft from here. https://www.dreamspark.com/ And you can get some free tools from Microsoft from http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/visual-web-developer-express and http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/express Grab these free tools and study study study

My advice would be to learn javascript and python . And learn any database system mysql or oracle. If you can complete this then try data structure and algorithm with discreet mathematics . Thsi will give you solid fundamentals in programming.
