To find a vectors magnitude using y and x components, would you use the Pythagorean theorem?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Yes\[magnitude=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}\]

Thanks! Also, to find a vectors direction wouldn't it always be in the direction of beg to end? Like this: |dw:1342572606306:dw|

OpenStudy (shane_b):

I wouldn't look at it that way. Look at what the directions of the x/y components are and you should be able to intuitively see what the direction of the vector is. In your example it would be:|dw:1342572933793:dw|

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Here you have a y component going down and an x component going left...so the resultant vector will be going down and to the left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! I see, I'll try that. Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Good luck :)
