The figure below shows four locations on a map. http://learn.flvs.net/webdav/assessment_images/educator_geometry_v14/pool_Geom_3641_0309_03/image0044e245f74.jpg Location 1 and Location 3 are 300 km apart. Location 1 and Location 4 are less than 200 km apart. Location 1 and Location 3 are 200 km apart. Location 1 and Location 4 are more than 300 km apart. I'm certain the answer is C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how certain are you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha well I was pretty certain until you asked xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ash2326 what do you think?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

correct me if im wrong..but dont you just use sines/cosines here?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

location 1 and 2= 300 km angle opposite to them=85 degrees angle opposite to location 1 and 4= (180-85)=95 degrees larger the angle the larger the side opposite to it for 85 we have 300 ( location 1 and location 2) for 95 degrees it'd be greater than this so location 1 and location 4 are more than 300 km

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

or is it only applicable in right triangles?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

@lgbasallote you could use sin/ cosines here also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah! Thank you guys! sorry for that confusion

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no there's no 90 degrees :/

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

there needs to be a 90 degree angle to be able to use sines and cosines

OpenStudy (ash2326):

@lgbasallote for a triangle with angle A, B and C and sides a, b, c \[\frac{\sin A}{A}=\frac{\sin B}{B}=\frac{\sin C}{c}\]

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

ah yes sine law

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what i was referring to as sine/cosine was opp and adj so there was a bit of misinterpretation heh

OpenStudy (ash2326):

no worries :D

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

but i dont think her lesson is sine law...a minute ago she was asking triangle similarity o.O

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it would be fun to use sine law though :/

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so much easier than manipulation

OpenStudy (ash2326):

yes:D
