In series and sequences, what is the difference between the formulas n(n+1)/2 and n/2(a+l) where a=first term and l=last term???

n(n+1)/2 : is used for calculating sum for a special arithmetic sequence, it gives sum of FIRST n natural numbers the other one is a generic formula for calculating sum for any arithmetic sequence
