OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

A metaphor is any sentence that compares two things without using like or as. Can you find the answer now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be d ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought b at first until you explained it

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Correct! Another way to find this answer would be to know the definition of a simile. If you don't know, a simile is any sentence that compares two things and DOES use like or as. It is the opposite of a metaphor :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i get it now (:

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Awesome, if you have any other questions, you could just post them here instead of making new ones :) It's allowed, but it might be easier for you :P

(1) After my interview with these four young people, I reflected on the quiet sense of "difference" I sensed with many of these Upward Bound students. (2) As a college teacher who has also taught seventh-grade science, I have some experience with the faces and attitudes of adolescence. (3) Upward Bound students had those faces. (4) There was the puzzled coping with changing bodies—hormone hell. (5) There was ambivalence about "authority figures" and uncertainties about whether or not the world would have some place for them. (6) There were the studied rationalizations about lapses on homework assignments, moments of despair, adolescent angst—all of that. (7) But there was also that "difference." (8) Maybe it's one part knowing people care and one part beginning to trust the future. (9) I wasn't sure. (Turner, "Onward and Upward: Upward Bound Helps Open College Doors," Virginia Journal of Education, June 1992. Adapted as fair usage.) 8. Which statement best summarizes the conclusion one may draw from this passage? A. The "difference" may result from emotional support and increased self-confidence. B. It is clear that positive role models and emotional support are keys to success. C. Adolescents need a firm hand. D. One can draw no conclusions about the "difference" shown by Upward Students

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Hm. Which do you say it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im thinking B or maybe D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure tho

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Alright, well, here's an SAT tip. If you don't know the answer, start by eliminating answers you KNOW are wrong. Is that possible in this case?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay it wouldnt be A , and im sure its not C , now i think its D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and B doesn't sound right ether , so D .

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Well, it's definitely not C. Which is right, it's also not B. So that's also right. Now we're down to A and D. Why do you think it wouldn't be A, but it would be D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i think its A , because its showing the differences in the students . and D draws no conclusions .

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

I think that it is A but I'm not sure :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think A too (:

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

The Call of the Wild is a story about a dog named Buck. Buck is a pampered dog who lives with a wealthy family in southern California. During the Gold Rush, Buck is captured, sold, and eventually shipped to Alaska to work as a sled dog. Along the way, Buck is mistreated by a series of owners. Eventually he learns to survive as a member of a dog sled team. As a result, Buck soon realizes that in the Yukon of Alaska, "the law of club and fang" is stronger than the rules of civilized society. With each new experience, Buck becomes more acquainted with his primitive past. Finally, after losing the one person who treated Buck well, Buck decides to return to living in the wild. 9. From the information above, which one of the following headlines would best represent the theme of Jack London's story? A. Dog Learns the Ropes of Sled Teams B. Dog Mistreated by Owners C. Pampered Dog Moves to Alaska D. Dog's Roots Call Him Back

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Alright, same process as the last one :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im saying its D because he goes back to the wild . i dont think it would be A because its not just about him becoming a sled dog , and it wouldnt be B because he was mistreated by a few owners , and C isnt right its not about a pampered dog moving to alaska he was kidnapped and was all over not just in alaska (:

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

That is correct! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12. Below is the last stanza of a poem, "Dover Beach," written in 1876 by Matthew Arnold.    Ah, love, let us be true    To one another! for the world, which seems    To lie before us like a land of dreams,    So various, so beautiful, so new,    Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,    Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;    And we are here as on a darkling plain    Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,    Where ignorant armies clash by night. Which of these statements best describes the remedy Arnold proposes for the world? A. Look to your dreams for answers to life's questions. B. The world may end, but love conquers all. C. Our faith in each other can shelter us from deceptive chaos. D. In this deceptive world, ignorance requires faith.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im thinking C , it wouldnt be A no where in the poem is it talking about dreaming , and it wouldnt be D because we ignorance does not require faith . and not B because it only talks about love in the first sentence .

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

I think that is right :)
