a function does not allow the same x with a different y so (1,2) and (1,3) are not allowed (same x=1 but 2 different y values)
one quick way to test some of these is try y= +1 and y=-1 and see if x is the same. if you get the same x, then you do not have a function.

if by (a) you mean y^2 = x^2 notice that (1,1) and (1,-1) both work. Try it. so it is not a function
