Let f(x) = 3x – 42 and g(x) = 5x. Part 1 [4 points] What is (f ◦ g)(x) ? Part 2 [2 points] Use complete sentences to describe the method you used to solve this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The open circle symbol there indicates that "f is composed of g". This is equivalent to f(g(x))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For finding this: Put 5x in place of x in f(x): f(5x) = 3*(5x) - 42 Can you simplify it further??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not TOO much of a simplification but can you think of anything that goes into both 15 and 42?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you can factor out a 3 from 15x - 42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3(5x - 14)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it's 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's correct. Not much of a simplification but thats about all you can do with that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okaay. what method would this be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@qpHalcy0n ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is function composition, because f is composed of g. Eg: Function f depends on function g. You are using factoring to "simplify" it further.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay.
