Not a question, just a comment. The STAR testing issue that is in the news is EXACTLY why we as moderators monitor and discourage the posting of test questions and the flat answering of those questions. Just sayin'.
so...i shouldnt have helped with this quiz questions should i.
many a mistake a nottim has made
I Suppose those are NOT-mistakes.
there's no way to really fix this problem, is there?
Actually the deletion of blatant cheating is the fix. Even if someone benefits before the deletion, at least OS limits it's culpability in regard to the cheating issue.
the internet is a vast resource. if only online schools and such disable everything else but their quiz page, such as otehr websites and printscreen, would there ever achieve true test scoring. I think on OS's part, they could collaborate with high schools, unis, summer schools, etc, in ensuring by comparing results if exact test questions were asked. but that's a bit extensive.
or yeah. what you said. but how do we actually know if one is cheating?
1. What is the capital of Florida? (1 point) 2. What is the capital of North Carolina? (1 point) etc. etc. is a pretty good clue.
Can you post a link to a related article?
about the star testing issue
wow that was rude.
Really???
I gave a relavant article.
your second link is a Rick Roll @jagatuba hehe
Of course it is. Who do you think I am? Certainly not one who would post a legitimate link without also posting a Rick Roll to go with it.
ah, well played :)
I trusted you....
Well, Romero, if you were detective, you should have detected patterns in Jagatuba's response by looking at his questions in the past.
Well I thank you. your trust was well plated as I did give you what you were looking for. AND if you had a sense of humor you would have also chuckled as I played a joke on you at the same time.
they attempt to scan the url link, or possibly use google chrome's developer tools to look it thru
* well placed
Jaga, you should have done this more smoothly. why not use http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=-tXXHfhgyc8&NR=1
Perhaps. However, I'm fond of the Rick Roll. I grew up in the 80's so . . .
huh?
Whoa Jagatuba is alive. 1. Pardon my lack of participation but I don't watch the news. I read that article but I don't understand your point. Is it just that OS might be in trouble if a question slips by where a student was cheating? 2. Thank you to TuringTest for saving me the effort of clicking the extra link. c;
Well, the STAR testing debacle is not good. Thousands of student could be affected in that they might have to retake their tests. Might seem like not too big a deal, but at least here in California it is. Schools are already strapped for money as it is and having thousands of students retake the tests is going to hurt. Now on one hand, the websites involved in the posting of STAR tests are not going to receive a lot of flack because they are social media sites and have no one to answer to scholastically. They are privately funded and can pretty much do as they please. Even if schools and parents got up in arms toward say Facebook what do you think would happen? Yeah, not much. On the other hand, OpenStudy is NOT privately funded. It is supported by grants including funding by the National Science Foundation. Therefore, if schools and parents were to petition the NSF because OS has become known as a place to come cheat on scholastic tests (it hasn't, but could if left unchecked), what do you think would happen? It is very possible that OS could lose one or more of its biggest sources of funding. NOT GOOD.
:O Comprende.
We need to have higher standards in OS. Not giving out answers is not enough. We should be more strict.
Reporting is more than enough if people would actually do it.
Well, good point Romero, but I think that users still need to feel free to share their knowledge. If we are too strict they might get turned off. There is a fine line between allowing an open discussion and moderating the users to death.
No I mean that there is a grey area with our current standards. I see people do and show the work but still give out answers in the end. That is the same as giving answers away because we can't control what the students read. They can skip right to the answer and write it down.
He does have a point.
Teaching is not easy. It should be difficult and writing the work down is easy. Anyone who can do the problem can do that.
Yes, but as long as explanation is being provided we have some ground to stand on. Guiding the users is the goal and there are always going to be those that try to take the shortcut, but as long as WE as a community are not shooting straight to the answer then we can say, "look, we do our best to provide learning rather than answers." It leaves us in a defensible position, whereas we would have no defense if cheating just ran rampant on this site.
#winning
That's the same as reading from a book. Plenty of examples and explanation but the difference is that they are provided with the answers they want.
who the heck's side is @rebeccaskell94
That is nice to see you write here @jagatuba after a long time .. By the way the points that you mentioned are great sir thanks!!!
I see valid points on each side, haha
just admit you're siding wih the one who's winning :p lol
oh! i was so unaware of this happening! i'll be careful with the answers i post from now on. thanks for letting us know!
haha hmmm @lgbasallote...okay xD
Wait a second, we can report people for posting answersto potential quiz answers, or posting potential quiz questions?
Both. If it's obvious they are in a quiz or test you can. With the answer thing, though, we report them whether it's a quiz/test or not. Just giving the answers is no bueno. Unless you're asking whether or not we report someone who is simply helping someone with a quiz/test. I don't know then. I'd assume not, but, if they know better...they know better, and should be reported. On the other hand, if you only reported the asker then a mod could look through the post and decide what they want to do with it. As in, who gets warnings/bannings (if needed) etc etc
Nah, they said it was just homework. I would've been frustrated trying to help them, though.
