if you wanted to eliminate the y variable by adding the two equations in the following system, what could be your first step? x - y = 6 4x - 3y = 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You would do the opposite of PEMDAS...SADMEP. You're trying to isolate y, so what do you think you would do first? Maybe get rid of the x? How would you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somehow you need to get the first x to become -4x... some multiplication should do.

i dont think @Calcmathlete and @Hyginkz read the WHOLE question ;) haha

I must be getting tired...seriously...MUST REACH 90 TONIGHT! lol... @isa123 you have to multiply the first equation by something so that when you add, the y cancels and it becomes 0.

ok, +3y, same step though
