u need to make sure that both of the fraactions have the same denominator
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so u could turn 3/4 --> 15/20
and turn -2/5 --> -8/20
OpenStudy (anonymous):
now just do 15/20 + -8/20
OpenStudy (anonymous):
u shud get 13/20 :)

i'm not getting how 3/4 become 15/20
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you multiply the enitr fraction by 5 so you can have a similar denominator of 20
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and you multiply -2/5 by 4 to get its denominator as 20
OpenStudy (anonymous):
u get it now? :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
nt really

OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok this is how i got it 3/4 + (-2/5)
3/4 - 2/5
i'm lost after that
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you still need to make the denominators the same
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i'm lost after 3/4 + (-2/5)
3/4 - 2/5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
make both fractions have the same number under the fraction bar

i don't understand
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do you know what a denominator is?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you so me how to do this question with somethinglike it
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay lets say you have 2/3 + 2/4
you need to make the denominators (number on the bottom) the same
so you multiply the fractions until the denominators are the same
OpenStudy (anonymous):
the the LCM of 3 and 4 is 12....so you need to make them both 12...so you can multiply 2/3 by 4 and 2/4 by 3

so 2/3 turns into 8/12 and 2/4 turns into 6/12 ...now you just add them and get 14/12
